Matthew 24:32-46, "The Return of Jesus"

  1. In the first part of Matthew 24 we clearly see that the Disciples are curious about Jesus coming and the end of the age.  That curiosity is still present today.  Discuss why you are curious about Jesus second coming and what is it that you know and don't know?  What would you like to know?  What are you curious about?
  2. In what ways can we be misled about the second coming of Jesus?  Why is Jesus so concerned that we would be misled (vs.4,11,24)?  What's the danger?
  3. What does it mean when Jesus says that many will come declaring that they are the Christ?  Who are they and why would they do that (check out 2 Peter 2)?  Why is it important that we know they will be coming?
  4. Jesus speaks of serious persecution against the people of God.  What is the reason for the persecution?  How does Matt. 10 help you understand Matt.24:9-12?
  5. What does it mean in vs.12, when Jesus says "because lawlessness is increased, most peoples love will grow cold"?  Is there any reason to believe we are seeing this today, and what are those reasons both pro and con?
  6. Why is it important that Jesus has "told us these things in advance"?  Discuss this in light of an old adage that says "to be fore warned is to be fore armed".  Also how does telling something in advance pertain to whether a prophet is false or not?
  7. What is it that we are to learn from the fig tree concerning Jesus return?  (33)
  8. Discuss vs. 36. What does it mean?  Check out Acts 1:7. Why is it important that we know this and accept it?
  9. What were the days of Noah like (37,38)?  What can we learn about these days from Genesis 6; 2 Peter 2:5; 3:3-10?  How does all of this apply to us today?
  10. Why is Jesus so concerned that we be "on the alert" concerning His second coming?
  11. What does it mean to be on the alert?  What does that look like today? Why is it important?
  12. What does it mean that Jesus will come like a thief in the night (vs. 43)? Check out 2 Peter 3:10.
  13. What does Jesus want us to be ready for? Why is it so important that we are ready?  What things would cause us to not be ready?  What does it mean to be ready?  Check out 2 Peter 3:14-18.
  14. Who is the faithful and sensible servant Jesus describes in vs.45? Why are they blessed by the master?  In what way does this apply to each of us?  How does it help us understand what we are to be doing and not doing until Jesus returns?
  15. What is it that Jesus has left us to do?  Start with Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:19-20. What is it that Jesus has left you to do? Check out Matthew 25:14-30.
  16. How does Matthew 25 illustrate what Jesus has taught in Matthew 24?  What do the stories help us understand?  Why is it personally important that we understand?
  17. What have you learned from Matthew 24 concerning the second coming of Jesus, and how is that going to change the way you live your life in Jesus this coming week?
