Jeremiah 29, “Living in the Will of God”

  1. According to Jeremiah God has sent Israel into exile for their sins. Reflecting upon the chapters leading up to 29, what do you think God wanted Israel to learn?
  2. One of the things we see here is how God uses "hard things" and "hard times" to correct and mature His people.  How is the will of God revealed through "hard things" and in what way(s) does it equip us for the purposes God has for us?
  3. As a cross reference exercise check out the following passages where God uses hard things to teach his servants some very valuable things about God and themselves.  What did they discover about themselves and what did they discover about God and His will for their lives

  4. How where the children of Israel to engage in their time in exile (vs. 5-7)?
  5. What does it mean to "seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you"?
  6. In what way does your answer in # 5 help us understand God's will for our lives today?
  7. What would fulfilling Jeremiah's command to Israel look like today in our world?
  8. In verses 8-9 Israel is warned to not listen to the prophets in their midst.  Why? (28:15)
  9. What does it mean that God knows the plans that He has for us?
    1. Plans for good and not for calamity – Check out Romans 8:28
    2. You may have a future and a hope – Check out Proverbs 3:23,24; Numbers 23:19
  10. In what way does the promise of God in Jer. 29 help us live with confidence today?
  11. Think through this promise in light of Psalm 139:13-16.
