Jeremiah 31, "A New Covenant"

  1. What is a covenant? Why do you think God makes covenants?
  2. Throughout scripture God has made several covenants. In what way(s) is the New Covenant described in Jeremiah 31 different from the covenants we see in Gen.3:16-19 (Adamic); Gen. 9 (Noahic); Gen.12:1-3,6,7; 13:14-17; 15; 17:1-14; 22:15-18 (Abrahamic); Deut. 30:1-10 (Palestinian); Deut. 11 (Mosaic); 2 Sam. 7:8-16 (Davidic)?
  3. How does the New Covenant address the failure to uphold the Mosaic Covenant and the law on which the fulfillment of that covenant depends?
  4. In what way is the Mosaic law a force to bring God's people to an awareness of their need of a New Covenant and the Salvation that New Covenant provides? Check out Galatians 3:24-25; Romans 7:14-25; Romans 8:2-4.
  5. Why is the New Covenant needed? What will the New Covenant do that the other covenants did not do?
  6. In what way does this New Covenant promise fulfill and make possible, what God promised through Jeremiah 29:11-13? What does it mean in Jer. 31:27 "...days are coming" and when is that day?
  7. What does it mean in Jeremiah 31:33 when God says He will "put My law within them; and on their heart I will write it"? How do you think He will do that?
  8. What does it mean when God says that this New Covenant will result in "I will be their God, and they shall be My people"? In what way does the New Covenant provide what is needed to make that statement true, or at least more true than previous covenants established by God?
  9. Discuss the promise of this New Covenant in light of Jesus words in Luke 22:20. Is Jesus referring to the promised New Covenant in Jeremiah? In what way does the work Jesus finished on the cross provide for the fulfillment of the promises of the New Covenant in Jeremiah 31? (Hebrews 8-10).
  10. Examine Hebrews chapters 8-10. Through these passages what do we learn about the New Covenant and the importance it has for each of us today?
  11. In Hebrews 10:19-25 we are instructed because of the New Covenant to live in a new and different kind of way. How is it that we are in relationship to God and how are we to live in relationship with one another? How does the promises of the New Covenant enable us to do what we exhorted to do?
  12. Why, and in what way is God's New Covenant important to you? What are you going to do with what God has revealed to you through these passages? (Application)
